How Liberal is the City of Amsterdam?
Get to know the controversial sites of liberal Amsterdam. What’s the story behind all the coffeeshops and Red Light District? What’s hidden in most countries is out in the open in Amsterdam. The Liberal Amsterdam tour is intriguing yet respectful.
Take a Private Tour of the Red Light District
Walk the oldest part of town with a guide on your side. You will be informed about do’s and don’ts and see places you might otherwise miss. This tour usually takes about 1 – 1,5 hour and can be perfectly combined with other areas of the city, for example with a Classic Amsterdam Tour.
New rules for tours from 1 April 2020
From 1 April 2020 guided tours may no longer be allowed along sex workers’ windows in Amsterdam. The draft Permit Policy for Guided Tours 2020 sets out measures to reduce disruptions caused by overcrowding, create more space in the streets and provide for a decent working environment for sex workers.
What time of the day is best to see the Red Light District?
The best time of the day to see the Red Light District depends on what you would like to see. This tour can be done by daytime or nighttime. At night it will be much more crowded and the Red Light District will be more lifely. After dark the lights and activities will be much more visable and impressive. By daytime you have more space to walk around but you will still get an idea of the area and get it of your ‘bucketlist’. Up to you.
How safe is the Red Light District?
The Red Light District is quite a safe area to walk around. The police is observing with many camera’s what is happening in this area. Just do not take any pictures or video yourself! That would be very unsafe to do, since the ladies working in this district can become very agressive with you when you look like you are taking pictures. So we advise to put away your camera. Also there can be pickpockets around, so better be alert!
Coffeeshops in Amsterdam
In the Red Light District you will find many Coffeeshops. A Coffeeshop should not be confused with a place to get coffee, like a bar. Coffeeshops are the place to get Marihuana in Amsterdam. People do not go there for coffee, but to get high. Learn about this during your tour. If it is of your interest, you might want to visit the Hash Marihuana & Hemp Museum with your tour as well. This first ‘Marihuana’ museum in the world was opened in 1985.
Cruise the Red Light District
If you prefer not to walk the area, you can also cruise this part of town during a VIP Cruise. However the most famous Red Light District canal (Oudezijds Achterburgwal) is closed for boats due to renovation works of the quays.
